- Catalytic Converter
-
- The catalytic
- converter helps
- reduce the amount
- of poisonous gases
- that the engine
- emits as a result
- of burning fuel.
- The engine emits
- carbon monoxide and
- unburned
- hydrocarbons, and
- before the days of
- the catalytic
- converter, these
- would go straight
- out the tailpipe
- and into the
- atmosphere. These
- emissions
- contributed greatly
- to the buildup of
- smog. In the
- 1970s, legislation
- was enacted to cut
- down on the amount
- and types of
- emissions that were
- acceptable.
-
- Catalytic
- converters use a
- catalyst, often a
- very thin coating
- of platinum, to
- change the carbon
- monoxide and
- unburned fuel to
- carbon dioxide and
- water vapor,
- substances that are
- much less damaging
- to the environment.
-
- Leaded gasoline
- cannot be used in
- engines that are
- fitted with
- catalytic
- converters, because
- the lead in the gas
- combines with the
- platinum to render
- the converter
- useless.
